About the event Paris Bukarest, Nathalie Joly canta a Maria Tanase

Paris Bukarest, Nathalie Joly canta a Maria Tanase

Maria Tanase personifies the soul of Rumania and was one of the great voices of the century. Nathalie Joly dedicates a show to her, combining adaptations and original versions of Maria Tanase classics...

- Le Figaro

Throughout her artistic career, the French singer Nathalie Joly has been inspired by the combination of story and music to create shows which alternate between new compositions and songs from the repertoire of the Belle Époque. On this occasion, Joly recalls the cosmopolitan Bucharest of the 30s and 40s, performing a collection of gypsy ballads and folklore legends which have at their heart, the figure of Maria Tanase (1913-1963). Tanase was a child when she learned the songs sung by the gypsy workers of Bucharest. She was 35 when her voice was heard for the first time on Rumanian radio and just 37 when all her recordings were destroyed and the songs banned from being performed for political reasons. She was 49 when she died but is still idolised in Rumania as the vocal memory of the country’s turbulent 20th century history and is popularly known as the Edith Piaf of eastern Europe.
