About the event

Amar

"There's a lot of clarity, a lot of research on each person who takes to the stage, on the overall theatricality and some dramatic outcomes which are well worth getting to know."

- CARLOS PACHECO, LA NACIÓN

Onstage, there are two chairs, the branch of a tree, some microphones and torches. Enter six actors, three men and three women, dressed for a night out. There is little to suggest what will happen from this point on. But no sooner have the lights gone out then one of the actors, illuminated by another with a torch, begins to perform, the development of the characters taking us through the course of an intense and wayward night.

Amar, under the baton of Argentinian director, Alejandra Catalán, is a harsh and realistic proposition where all spatial, lightning and sound procedures are executed in an transparently manual and visible way without jeopardizing the fiction present in the scene. In fact, the fiction emerges even stronger. The interaction develops via the six actors who, through the night, wander around a forest, a dance floor, a bar and the sea. Maybe life itself? Amar is a juggling act and a play. It is the trick of these performers to reveal that to act hides nothing. Here is a theatrical research lesson where music accurately accompanies the work of the actors and where the lighting (consisting of torches and small spotlights) becomes an important character within the work. In 2010, Amar won the Premio Florencio Sánchez award for best director (Alejandro Catalán), the Premios Teatro del Mundo a la Mejor Iluminación for best lighting (Matías Sendón and Alejandro Catalán) and the Diseño Sonoro y Musicalización sound and music prize (Bruno Luciani and Sergio Catalán).

The staging of the work in the Teatro Pradillo in May will not only be a Spanish premiere but a European one as well. The production is also accompanied by critical acclaim. The Radar supplement of Argentinian paper, Página 12, said: "Amar is a work to be enjoyed for its performance" while Territorio Teatral remarks: "Love is just the excuse to reveal misery, points of view and conflicting philosophie."
