Gracias a los rodajes cinematográficos anglosajones que desembarcaban en Madrid, y al nacimiento y auge del western producido en Europa, popularizado como “spaghetti western”, se desarrolla una actividad económica singular en la Comunidad de Madrid. En Colmenar Viejo se construyó el primer poblado del oeste de Europa. En Hoyo de Manzanares se levantó el primer poblado del oeste ya de carácter estable de Europa, y en él rueda Sergio Leone con Clint Eastwood prácticamente en su totalidad “Por un puñado de dólares”, arrancando el fenómeno del Eurowestern… En la Comunidad de Madrid han rodado westerns Robert Siodmak, Raoul Walsh, Richard Fleischer, Raquel Welch, Robert Mitchum, Charles Bronson, Lee Van Cleef, Robert Shaw, Claudia Cardinale, Alain Delon, Gina Lollobrigida, Terence Hill, Joan Collins, Tom Berenguer, Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, Brigitte Bardot o Lee Marvin. Debutaron actores como William Shatner o Burt Reynolds, John Wayne condujo una diligencia en el madrileño Parque de El Retiro, o Clint Eastwood disparó más rápido que nadie…
Independientemente de que guste o no el género western, existe la fascinación colectiva por los iconos y elementos del Far West. Por las diligencias, los sombreros, los guardapolvos, los ponchos o los penachos de plumas. Sin ser parte de España, la historia de la segunda década del siglo XIX de los EEUU y la construcción del territorio del oeste nos es absolutamente familiar, especialmente gracias al cine. Un cine que se rodó también en la capital y pueblos de la Comunidad de Madrid, tanto por parte de empresas americanas, como de nacionales y europeas. Más de quinientas películas de este género se rodaron en Europa, y de estas más de doscientas en la Comunidad de Madrid, una cifra que supera los rodajes western de otras zonas de España.

The shootings of foreign film productions in Madrid and the birth and rise of the genre of western films produced in Europe, popularly known as "Spaghetti Western", triggered the development of a unique economic activity in the Madrid region. The first wild west town in Europe was built in Colmenar Viejo. In Hoyo de Manzanares, the first permanent wild west town in Europe was created, the location where Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood filmed almost entirely “A Fistful of Dollars”, kicking off the Euro-western phenomenon. The region of Madrid has been the location of productions featuring talent such as Robert Siodmark, Raoul Walsh, Richard Fleischer, Raquel Welch, Robert Mitchum, Charles Bronson, Lee Van Cleef, Robert Shaw, Claudia Cardinale, Alain Delon, Gina Lollobrigida, Terence Hill, Joan Collins, Tom Berenguer, Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, Brigitte Bardot or Lee Marvin. Actors such as William Shatner or Burt Reynolds made their debut here; John Wayne drove a stagecoach in El Retiro Park in the city of Madrid, or Clint Eastwood shot faster than anyone else...
Whether one likes the western genre or not, we all share a collective fascination with the Far West icons and features: the stagecoaches, hats, overalls, ponchos or feather headdresses. Even though this genre has nothing to do with Spain, the history of the second decade of the 19th century in the USA and the creation of the Wild West is very familiar to us, especially thanks to the cinema. And those films were actually shot in the capital city and other towns in the region of Madrid by American, Spanish and European producers. More than 500 Wild West films were shot in Europe, of which more than 200 productions were filmed in the Madrid region, much more than the number of western films shot in other areas of Spain.

Más de una treintena de municipios de la Comunidad de Madrid han albergado, especialmente en las décadas de los sesenta y setenta del siglo pasado, rodajes de películas de género western. La mayoría de sus localizaciones se encuentran hábiles para servir como decorados de cine, a la espera de nuevas filmaciones.
Proponemos cuatro rutas en torno a los municipios que albergaron más rodajes. Recorrer sus paisajes supone viajar por los ambientes propios del Far West. Mientras, hay más localidades que conocieron rodajes, y se pueden consultar en el mapa.
During the 1960s and 1970s more than thirty municipalities in the Community of Madrid hosted the shooting of a number of Western films. Most of their locations are still fully operational and available to serve as film sets in new productions.
We propose four routes around the municipalities that hosted most of the shootings. A tour around their landscapes would help visitors to recreate the atmosphere of the Far West. Additionally, there are more towns that hosted shootings, as can be seen on the map.
