Diana Szeinblum has built her career in dance and performance. Trained in Argentina, she began her professional career with the company directed by Oscar Araíz. In 1990, she was awarded a scholarship by the Goethe-Institut to study at the Folkwang Tanzstudio, a prestigious school founded in 1928 by Kurt Jooss and later directed by Pina Bausch. Szeinblum went on to dance with the Tanztheater Wuppertal, founded by Bausch.

If I accept as true the idea that dance challenges every notion of the body, I could then change the title from ‘Argentine Dances’ to ‘Argentine Bodies’. Some say that traditional dances are the very essence of a people. It could therefore be said that the essence of the people is the body. In which bodies does the people dance? Does physically exploring what the body does when it moves whilst performing traditional dances bring one closer to the very essence of the people?

Adentro! offers a deconstruction of Argentine folklore through dance. It also serves as a dissenting treatise on traditional notions of masculinity. Featuring three dancers on stage, the piece explores the search for a ‘ño body’ and a new language, in which tradition is seen as fluid and permeable, thereby stripping it of its static and patriarchal heritage.

Following a process of research and documentation into the various Argentine folk dances, a number of questions arose which Diana Szeinblum wishes to bring to the stage: What does the body do when it dances folk dances? How can one deconstruct a form of folk knowledge? How does one come to not know what one already knows?
