Cristián Plana, who is directing this adaptation for two performers of Historia de un jabalí (o algo de Ricardo III), is a Chilean director with close ties to the Teatro Stabile di Napoli, known for forging a strong connection with the audience in all his productions. His international career includes works such as Castigo and Paso del Norte, both of which have won awards from the Chilean Critics’ Circle.

Gabriel Calderón, a leading figure in the performing arts in Uruguay, has created and contributed to more than 25 productions. As a playwright, he has written more than 20 plays. Some of these include Mi muñequita (La farsa), for which he received the Florencia Prize from the Uruguayan Association of Theatre Critics (2004), Mi pequeño mundo porno (2011) and Tal vez la vida sea ridícula (2016), both of which were awarded the Uruguayan National Literature Prize.

Together, they have staged this production in which two actors take on the challenge of playing Richard III, the ruthless monarch from Shakespeare’s tragedy. Both of them have spent their whole lives playing supporting roles, and both of them believe they deserve better. But as the character takes shape, driven by a disproportionate ego, the similarities between the actors and the king begin to emerge.

In this way, a political conflict from the late 15th century – the bloody rise to power of Richard III – is set against the backdrop of a small theatre company.

As the relationship between the actors, the characters and the audience develops, a space is created for reflection on the limits of human ambition, contemporary mechanisms of power, desire and resentment.
