About the Event MANERIES

MANERIES

An actress with full energetic control and extreme concentration that can enter into the feelings of the spectator with a poignant intensity

- Carlos Pachecho, La Nación

The term "maneries" is used by the philosopher Giorgio Agamben in his book, The Coming Community, which refers to a type of (water) spring ("Manare manantial; it isn't a being in this or that way but a being which is itself the way of being and therefore, while still unique, is multiple and valid for everyone...")

With MANERIES, the young Colombian choreographer Luis Garay invites us to an experience examining time and form in which the body is the linguistic material. The dancer, Florencia Vecino, takes her skills to the limit in a performance full of energy which situates the audience somewhere between philosophy, science, tribal ritual and performance.

The stage clears and the plucked tones of the music are exact, hypnotic and rhythmic. Florencia Vecino's body vibrates and changes form. The languages crossover and the audience is hostage to a production which refers not to a universal (the body) nor to a person (Florencia) but embraces the two.

MANERIES premiered in Switzerland in November 2008 and following the Festival de Otoño en primavera will visit Berlín (In/Out Ballhaus Naunynstrasse).

Luis Garay trained in various countries including Finland (Lyseon Lukio), France (Centre National de la Danse, Opera de Rhin, Mulhouse), Colombia (Fundación Ballet Priscila Welton) and Argentina (Teatro General San Martín) and studied alongside choreographers such as Emio Greco and Win Vandekeybus. His ironic style and search for new models of beauty as well as the extreme physical quality of his works makes him a reference point in contemporary choreography.
