COMEDIA Y SUEÑO

A declaration of intent about what theatre means now, about what the performance represents and its intimate relation with the direction our lives take.

- DIARIO ABC

Comedia y Sueño is the onstage meeting between Federico García Lorca and William Shakespeare via the merging of the former's Comedia sin título and the latter's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Using an open theatrical language, the work takes the form of a dress rehearsal where reality and fiction go hand-in-hand to seduce the audience and invite them to escape their world and question freely their emotions.

An initiative of the Fundación Federico García Lorca, Comedia y Sueño was premiered in Granada in February this year. The work is seen through the eyes of Lorca's characters who are preparing a production of Shakespeare's classic. Lorca was known to be a great admirer of A Midsummer Night's Dream, and was particularly interested in how men and women can do little to alter the capricious and accidental nature of love. The architect of Comedia y Sueño, Juan Carlos Corazza, explains the relevance of these two timeless writers: "In Shakespeare and in Lorca, we can learn that theatre is a vehicle for compassion, it can humanise and give us greater knowledge. We also recognise this yearning in the hundreds of people who turn to the stage to recover the creative spark of youth. Perhaps this statement of faith could serve as a tonic for today's world, increasingly in need of help. Because theatre is now, more than ever, an act of faith and compassion, urgent and necessary."

Comedia y Sueño is a production of the Fundación Federico García Lorca and the Compañía Teatro del Estudio.
