Theatre is for who? Who should be seen on stage? The intrepid British company, Quarantine, described by The Guardian as one of the best theatre groups of the moment, deals with questions surrounding the theatre within the theatre. Entitled is a tender, revealing, delicate and entertaining work which talks of hope and disappointment and of how human beings try to make their lives complete.

 

Quarantine's work examines the here and now with a staging that is both bold and ambitious but also widely accessible. Entitled is about the real people who appear behind the scenes. And each one has his or her own story to tell. It is a work based on the stage entrances and departures of the technicians and performers, exploring the "choreography" normally hidden from the audience which takes place when transforming an empty space into one ready for a theatrical presentation. The production incorporates live dance and music and offers performances in their purest form. The dancers and backstage staff talk, discuss their lives and even sing. Three technicians engaged on a production that we never actually get to see take centre stage and transport us into their particular world as they get the venue ready for a performance.

 

Entitled is an intimate work which is in a perpetual state of evolution. As with all Quarantine's productions, the performance changes every night. The reality is that real life does not stop when the play starts. Nominated for a Total Theatre Award at the 2011 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Entitled premiered at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre last July.
