About the event

Kaïros, sísifos y zombis

"Oscar Gómez Mata is ready to overcome any obstacle and, breaking the boundaries between fiction and real life, his performance transports us to an alternative world"

- KATHINKA SALZMANN, LA CITÈ

Oscar Gómez Mata and his company, L'Alakran, return to Madrid with one of his latest works, Kaïros, sísifos y zombis, which once again highlights his individual production style, where performances are treated as living, changing matter, directly linked to the eye of the observer. It presents the audience with a mixture of physics and philosophy which is both grisly and hilarious, reflecting on time as the principal element of human concern.

Attitudes such as consumerism, exploitation of other people and the capacity to take advantage of opportunities when they arise are also up for discussion. In addition, the dramatic technique of L'Alakran takes in the aesthetic quality and narrative procedures of the video-clip and the comic book, also drawing on verbal and gestural stage materials taken from the everyday experiences and behaviour of the actors themselves.

With productions which are playful, poetic, philosophical and often political, Oscar Gómez Mata has established himself as a leading light in contemporary European theatre, thanks to his particular stage technique, highlighting the importance of the relationship with the audience. In Kaïros, sísifos y zombis, he practices an enlightened buffoonery by which to judge our modern age and its contradictions with a boundless vitality. As Mata himself explains: "In my work, I always try to bring a practical and playful dimension to philosophical notions. I see the theatre as a symbolic exercise for life."

In this work, he examines Kairos, an ancient Greek word meaning the right or opportune moment - the time between two moments in real time - as well as people who behave in a Sisyphean way, repeating an endlessly laborious or futile task (from the Greek myth of Sisyphus), plus zombies, beings who move between two worlds, straddling both life and death. It is these last two concepts which provide the spark for the onstage action .
