Dedicated to her musician father, The Old Lady and The Beast is the latest venture from artist and actress Ilka Schönbein who, in a cabaret atmosphere straight from the 1930s, is inspired by the world of fairy tales to draw up a work in four movements consisting of bodily decline, aging, love and death.

She performs as a puppeteer, combining skills gained in the world of dance and theatre together with long movements and spectacular gestures, while Italian musician Alexandra Lupidi creates the required soundtrack for this journey of fantasy with jazz plus classical and contemporary music fused with guitar, bass and percussion.

Like a tragic queen, Ilka Schönbein evokes a dark sensuality and talks of the fate of a little dancer who wanted to be a great artist. She then takes up her pose, and in doing so, reflects an image reminiscent of Edgar Degas' famous sculpture of the Little Dancer of Fourteen Years.
