In Vaivén, Antonio Ruz and Juan Kruz Díaz de Garaio Esnaola become the motors and instruments of each other. The most direct description of the piece can be summarized in each one’s solo performance in which the choreographers and artists exchange the roles of director and performer. Although each solo constitutes a separate entity, it is in the sum of the two where the work achieves its full meaning.

At the beginning of the creative process of Vaivén, each artist gave his companion a list of wishes, expectations, ideas and elements he would like to include in his solo (Ruz and Kruz call it their “Letter to Santa”), giving total freedom from then on to whoever directed. Thus the creators and performers commence a game of reflections in which each one tries to be the other’s mirror, searching in the other for a definition of himself through both the similarities and all the differences between them.

In the first solo, Juan Kruz abandons his body to exhaustion.  He searches for the deepest emotion by driving himself to a physical state of exaltation and intoxication, surrendering his body to excess as in an ecstatic overdose, a both addict and addictive body, as matter, as a source of energy and above all as an emotional catalyst.  Meanwhile, in Antonio Ruz’s solo the voice is the centre, emanating from a body that maintains its integrity as an expressive and narrative medium. A repertoire of live songs from many periods and totally eclectic styles touches on themes of expulsion, exile, good-byes and longing, through a nomadic and unclothed character, both literally, metaphorically and metaphysically.

Prior to its presentation at the XXXII Festival de Otoño a Primavera in December, Vaivén will make its premiere on November 4th, 2014, at the Teatro Central in Seville.
