Set in a futuristic world where technology has evolved to a point transcending the boundaries of human control, Golem is an innovative and original creation by British company 1927 exploring man and his machines in an unusual way. With aesthetics reminding of a graphic novel of huge proportions, the British troupe invites the audience to enter a dark and fantastic tale about an extraordinarily ordinary man. Merging onstage traditional animation, “stop motion”, and live musical and acting performances, 1927 brings to the 33rd Festival de Otoño a Primavera an “amusing and unforgettable” fable, as it was praised by The Times, exploring in a satirical and intelligent way one of the great questions of modern day world: who or what controls our technologies?
1927 is one of the most essential rising theatre companies in the European contemporary stage-scene. It is specialised in creating a magical film-theatre, which could already be seen in Madrid in The Animals and Children Took to the Streets, one of the great surprises at the 2013 edition of the Festival de Otoño a Primavera.
Golem is co-produced by 1927 with the prestigious Salzburg Festival, Théâtre de la Ville de Paris, and the London Young Vic Theatre. Its world premiere took place in August 2014 at the Salzburg Festival and the UK premiere was hosted by the Young Vic in December 2015. It has recently been awarded by the Critics Circle Award for best design. Golem’s 2015 International Tour included stops at such emblematic spaces as the Taiwan International Festival of the Arts, the Thèâtre de la Ville in Paris, the Chekhov Festival in Moscow and the HOME Manchester, among many others.
