One of the big surprises of the Almagro Festival in 2014 was the participation of Mexican theatre company Los Colochos, which scooped the OFF section with Mendoza, a brutal adaptation of Macbeth set in Mexico. The just unanimously chose this superb journey through the anthropology of Ibero America that, in its own words, "stirs and moves" and is necessary for its critical capacity with the world around us. Since then, this creation of director Juan Carillo has been performed at major festivals like Girona's Temporada Alta, Bogotá's Ibero-American Theatre Festival and Costa Rica's FIA and has fulfilled more than 300 representations.
In Mendoza, Shakespeare's Scottish tragicomedy is transferred to the Mexican Revolution to tell the story of a brave warrior who is visited by a witch or healer who announces that he will become governor and owner of the province. "He believes it and begins to commit atrocious acts to obtain what he was told he would until he realises he is in the middle of a lake of blood," explains Carillo who has scrupulously followed The Bard's structure. "We though the classics have something very universal and, starting with this universality we have taken it to the peculiarity of Mexico so that spectators can enter the play with their own references and familiar characters”. The idea was to get close to the essence of Shakespeare, what his theatre represented in its day, but experiencing it as something contemporary. "This power struggle he talks about continues today and it has no borders”.
The Los Colochos company was founded in 2010 in Mexico and in less than a decade it has become a leader on the Iberoamerican scene thanks to a philosophy that is committed to making theatre accessible at all levels of society. In fact, this piece was rehearsed in the houses of people who had no direct connection with the theatre to analyse their reactions. The sets, prepared with a low budget, are based on the expressive strength of the cast, their critical discourse and national identity. With his last outing, Romeo y Julieta + Nacahue, another version of Shakespeare moved to indigenous setting, Carillo once again received the applause of critics and audiences at the Almagro Festival.
