Hijos de Grecia is presented in collaboration with Teatro de La Abadía in Madrid.
Visceral theatre, that which is known and that which hurts. Theatre that hits, provokes, questions, and above all, is enjoyable”.
Manu de la Fuente, Gente con Duende

One of the most celebrated companies of the contemporary Spanish scene, famed for their immersive and experimental creations, bring to the 37th Autumn Festival 12 hours of a unique Greek tragedy. Hijos de Grecia will be performed by [los números imaginarios], under the able guidance of its young founder and stage director Carlos Tuñón, on the boards of Teatro de La Abadía in true Dionysian and Baroque styles, with theatre doors open from morning till night, from 11.00 to 23.00.

Written by Gon Ramos, Hijos de Grecia converts the audience into an active part of the discourse, in an attractive stage experiment that combines classical texts with contemporary situations. This montage, which premiered in the summer of 2018 at the Clásicos de Alcalá Festival, was warmly received by the public and critics alike, with tributes such as: "A risky, ambitious and brave work" (Clásicas Críticas) and "an exhilarating, unique experience" (Gente con Duende). Proyecto Duas put it like this: "twelve hours of Greek tragedy to view the past, the ongoing, and the future of what we were, are and shall be".

But what do the words "tragedy", "sacrifice" and "truth" mean today? What is our inheritance and what legacy shall we leave behind? What do we seek in theatre and who are the contemporary "heroes"? Is our "tragedy" valid? Does our life have an origin similar to that of the great Greek tales? These and many other questions are posed by the [los números imaginarios] ensemble to the public, by means of a proposal that traverses the world of Greek tragedy through the eyes, bodies and desires of the actors.

Carlos Tuñón presents himself as a "defender of the viewer's emancipation" and for the latter to "relate to the arts as they wish". His Hijos de Grecia maintains the participatory and immersive spirit of the earlier works of the company: La última noche de Don Juan, Hamlet entre todos or La cena del rey Baltasar. On this occasion they once again derive inspiration from a classical repertory, through a collective creation whose 12-hour duration split into three plots, is a replica of the spirit of this group during their rehearsal days, to speak by means of a Greek tragedy, about theatre, rites, war or the idea of Europe.

"Hijos de Grecia is not an updated version of a collection of Greek tragedies, but of how a young creative company goes through these myths with their biography and their questions: we open the doors of the theatre to pass an entire day with the audience, in the hopes that our questions will be theirs as well", states Tuñón.
