About the event

Le Voci di Dentro (Inner Voices)

"A fiesta for the eyes and ears which nobody should miss out on"

- PAUL GOIFFON, LA MARSEILLAISE

The base elements of the human condition mount the stage through the interpretation of the magnificent actor and director, Toni Servillo, one of the most revered artists in Italy and across Europe who, in May 2014, returns to Madrid with the neo-realist work, Le Voci di Dentro (Inner Voices). Using a clever and subtle theatrical approach, Servillo tackles one of the darkest texts of the Transalpino playwright, Eduardo De Filippo. With the support of an accomplished cast, including his brother Peppe, Servillo divides himself between the roles of director and leading actor. In an interview with the Italian press, Servillo himself explains how "the work speaks of the moral ruin which followed the financial ruin of post-war Italy". Old furniture, chairs and carpets (which the protagonists often rented out for religious holidays in order to make a living) invade the house Alberto and Carlos Saporito share with their uncle, Nicola. Alberto is convinced that a terrible crime has been committed by his neighbours. Namely, that his friend Aniello Amitrano has been murdered and his dead body hidden in the kitchen of the Cimmaruta family. In reality, Alberto has dreamed it all but it is so intense that he convinces himself it is a real event and informs the police who, obviously, find no trace of the body. Alberto understands, albeit too late, that it's all been the result of a bad dream.

Le Voci di Dentro (Inner Voices) arrives at the Teatros del Canal de la Comunidad de Madrid with a guaranteed seal of quality due to its production by three of the top European theatre companies, the Piccolo Teatro di Milano – Teatro d’Europa, the Teatro di Roma and the Teatri Uniti di Napoli. Its world premiere took place in March 2013 in Marseille and, before its appearance at the Festival de Otoño a Primavera, the work can be seen in October at Girona's Festival Temporada Alta. The La Marseillase newspaper described the production as "a fiesta for the eyes and ears which nobody should miss out on" while Il Sole 24 Ore declares: "Past and present merge naturally into a tapestry of lights, long silences and inner voices which bring Milan and Naples together in an Italian neorealist drama that never misses a beat, a work set in the past but which speaks of the present and questions the future".
