“Koršunovas is faithful to the principle of imaginative theatre. He tries to help the spectator imagine what cannot be performed”.7 meno dienes
One of the biggest names on Europe’s theatre scene today, Lithuanian director Oskaras Koršunovas will put the final touches on the XXIV Festival de Otoño a Primavera with his unique vision of Hamlet in a reaffirmation of the absolute relevancy of this Shakespeare classic. His interpretation of the play, perhaps the most cruel and explicit to ever hit the stage, is a hard-hitting denunciation of the false security, comfort and appearances that have taken over Western society.
Koršunovas’ Hamlet, which can be seen at Teatros del Canal’s Sala Verde from 8 to 11 June, places the spotlight on doubt, on theatre as an obsession, an addiction. The mise-en-scene is an incredibly deep, reflective and entertaining journey, using a set of mirrors that invite the audience to ask “Who are we?” “This work by Shakespeare is like a challenge”, says Koršunovas. “For me, for the actors, for the audience. It is an opportunity to confront ourselves, to examine and understand who we are. For a director, staging Hamlet is a bit like getting married. It is something you feel you’ll have to do when the time is right. And the time will be right, sooner or later. My own inner life at this point is, I feel, consistent with Hamlet’s life as a dramatic character”.
“On the other hand”, he continues, “any talk about how topical Hamlet is right now is bound to sound rather naïve, since this play is so deeply topical that it can always be credibly associated with current affairs. In a fundamental sense, the life of any young person in the early 21st century is like that of Hamlet’s”.
The show first premiered on 9 September 2008 in Stavanger (Norway) and will premiere in Madrid as part of the XXXIV Festival de Otoño a Primavera. Koršunovas’ Hamlet was first performed in Spain at the Shakespeare Festival in Mataró in 2010 and was also on the programme at Girona’s Festival Temporada Alta in 2012.
