The Guardian

The French group XY returns to the Autumn Festival to sail through the air with their striking acrobatics, once again displaying a new style of circus choreography that will leave many spectators speechless. With their first show,Le Grand C (2009), Compagnie XY revolutionised the world of circus and made a name for themselves thanks to a unique physical language that developed new forms of corporal expression. Almost a decade later, their third creation,Il n’est pas encore minuit…, which now premieres in Madrid, goes one step further in its explorations of the limits of acrobatic arts.

Il n’est pas encore minuit… is much more than a circus show. Excellence, coordination and discipline go hand-in-hand in a group creation that stays true to this interesting company’s purest style: with an exquisite acrobatic language, the remarkable French troupe create poetry on the horizon with balance, human pyramids, balance board jumps and tumbles and flips with impossible geometry that the performers combine with dance movements in an original and unique way. The piece, featuring a total of 22 acrobats on stage, has been acclaimed by critics as “an absolutely amazing kind of fusion between circus and contemporary dance”.

Il n’est pas encore minuit… … is an exceptional acrobatic experience, a fleeting and stimulating work that plays with our perception of time and reality. Whilst the euphoria of the weightlessness takes over the audience, XY takes their specialty to the stage once again: acrobatic lifts, a complex form in which a strong carrier launches a light acrobat into the air, holding all of her weight in his arms or keeping her up on his shoulders. On a naked stage, the group reclaims the relation between the individual and the group and is able to transmit all types of emotions to the rhythm of swing. Il n’est pas encore minuit… is a show about balance and perfection; an ode to precarious and imperfect humanity; an extraordinary proposal with heart-stopping acrobatics that will delight circus and performance lovers alike.

Il n’est pas encore minuit… (which, literally translated means “it’s not midnight yet...”) is that moment in which everything is possible. The party continues at its peak, the emotion continues increasing; we still have not reached our limit. Midnight is drawing close. The moment will soon arrive. The body dances, the eyes illuminate and magic is made.
