“The fear in this performance that has revolutionised this theatre supposedly for “children” is maddening, seductive.”.Le Monde
Joël Pommerat is one of the most solid figures of contemporary French dramaturgy, author and director of stage productions with a decidedly philosophical and existentialist slant that nonetheless eschew intellectuality in favour of the imagination, to connect with diverse audiences of all ages, fascinated by his mysterious and absorbing atmospheres. Particularly interested in rewriting children’s myths, he has cast his gaze on classic stories including Little Red Riding Hood, Pinocchio and Cinderella, reinventing them from a contemporary perspective to question today’s children and adults.
Starting from the famous story by Charles Perrault, Pommerat now invites us to delve into his own version of Little Red Riding Hood that he has rewritten and, with greater specificity and truth, reveals the most profound aspects of a story that is no less engaging due to its popularity: nature and the dangerous animal world, solitude and the mystery of the unknown, although also revealing life’s beauty and wonder. And—above all—he emphasises fear and its flip side, desire, as essential features of this story and in general, children’s lives.
A mother alone and overwhelmed by work, a grandmother who is equally alone yet ignored and a little girl who questions herself and her place in the world. With refined stage design, magnified by an imaginative use of light and ambient sound, the director plays with our memories so that we can confront our fears. The result is an ode to curiosity both for young and old, an introduction to controlling our emotions that encourages us to confront the complex world of adulthood in another way.
The presentation of Le Petit Chaperon Rouge at the 36th Autumn Festival is the very first time the Compagnie Louis Brouillard presents a work by Joël Pommerat in Madrid.
