Malgosia Szkandera, a Spaniard of Polish descent, is an actress, puppeteer and master object manipulator. She has been touring the world for several years with this simple, yet moving, show, an example of her rampant imagination and technical skill. The soulful show gives life – a new recycled life – to what has today become the diabolical material threatening the stability of the environment: plastic. Szkandera breathes life into banal and humble plastic bags and transforms them, supported by her body work, into small and mid-sized characters, to tell the story of a solitary woman who builds her own universe, exploring the poetic nature of a world without words. That woman is Bag Lady, a being who journeys through her past and her memories. During her journey she permeates all the characters she meets with her own desires and fantasies and all the moments she lives. Like when she comes across the dancer unable to dance until she discovers her own heart, or the nostalgic bon vivant searching for his lover, and a geisha who could be Madame Butterfly. In short, Bag Lady has been created from her heart and soul that explores – with delicacy and great evocative power – what hides beneath the people who don’t seem like anybody and are totally unique.
