Madrid premiere Country: UK Approx. duration: 1 hr 10 mins (no interval)
This is one angry piece, delivered like a roar of defiance in the face of an omnipotent, malevolent force. It's visceral, painful and very, very exciting... But even in the dark void at its centre there is humanity and tenderness, never quite extinguished.

Political Mother is the latest and much-anticipated work from Hofesh Shechter and his company, now a leading force on the UK dance scene. It follows two previous acclaimed productions, In Your Rooms and Uprising. His new work delves into the anxieties of life, represented through the movement of 10 onstage dancers plus eight live musicians who make up a visually stunning mosaic. As the production progresses, Shechter mixes pairs of performers and different musical styles in a melting pot which combines the energetic, innovative sound of electric guitars and drums with familiar classic music.
Political Mother is full of poetry and violence, gentleness and menace, strength and fragility. Shechter blurs contradictions on a stage marked by tension. Existential angst and the confrontation between power and individual are recurring themes in Shechter's productions and could be described as being even more accentuated in this production. After appearing at the Biennale de la Danse in Lyon, France, one critic highlighted the fact that "his production is a distressing portrait but admirably constructed on a subject that dance can rarely tackle in a harmonious way: those anonymous beings who are exiled, persecuted, oppressed".
The Hofesh Shechter Company is currently taking Political Mother on a tour of 24 cities across the world, taking in such emblematic venues as the Opera House in Sydney, Paris' Théâtre de la Ville and Sadler's Wells in London, to name but a few.
