About the event Una Velada de Música de Cámara

Una Velada de Música de Cámara (An Evening of Chamber Music)

The composer, Philip Glass, (Baltimore, 1937) is a musical revolutionary, a pioneer who has broken new ground in different areas, ranging from operas and symphonies, to the soundtracks of films such as Kundun, by Martin Scorsese, Peter Weir's The Truman Show and The Illusionist by Neil Burger.

In 2007, he made his debut in the Festival de Otoño with Book of Longing, a collaboration with singer Leonard Cohen. On this occasion he pools his talents with those of violinist Tim Fain, selected by Symphony magazine as one of the most promising young artists in 2006 and recognized by the Washington Post as a musician with "everything he needs for a first-rate career."

Together, Glass and Fain (who was a soloist with the Philip Glass Ensemble and first violinist with the Rossetti String Quartet) offer this evening of chamber music which includes the European premiere of a work commissioned specially by Tim Fain from Philip Glass called Partita for Solo Violin in seven movements. Fain says of the work: "I think it's really some of his best writing - so dark, lyrical, and melodic."

The evening is completed with some of the best-known piano works from the repertoire of Philip Glass, including Etudes and Metamorphis, excerpts from the soundtrack of The Screens (the 1989 version of Genet's work by Joanne Akalaitis for which Glass composed the music) and Pendulum, which was written by Glass for the 90th anniversary of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and which was performed for the first time in September 2010.
