The documentary theatre production, Derretiré con un cerillo la nieve de un volcán, is the latest venture from the interesting Mexican company, Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol. Their challenge this time is to investigate their country and their origins and dig into an extensive political past to help them understand the present in which they no live.

The theatre work is part of an overall project called PRI, which also includes an historical text called La Revolución Institucional (The Institutional Revolution). Like this, one part of the production finishes the moment the onstage performance ends while the other remains permanently available. Using this double-pronged approach, the Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol company examines the type of relationship that exists between a political party and its people.

The group also goes deeper into Mexican history, trying to understand why the political body that was once an instrument of social reconciliation and national unity, the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, ends up being a means of control to organise political participation. "Through extensive research, we aim to build a story of our country, not better or fuller than anyone else's but one which is nevertheless our own. A story which helps us to understand all those sayings, clichés, evils, tricks, habits and fears which have been told to us, which we have inherited from the PRI, its policies and its way of governing," the company explained in a recent newspaper interview.

Thanks to a dynamic multimedia discourse, Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol mixes interviews, declarations and clips from old TV programmes on a screen, together with models and other devices which are integral to animating this documentary drama. The overall effect is that the members of the audience take part in the performance as assistants to a small but active discussion forum.
