Les Inrockuptibles

Romeo Castellucci, the great master of contemporary European theatre, once again questions the figure of God through art. And he reinvents the world in the process, presenting a flurry of incredible images that move the audience from a more contemporary hyperrealism to an ancient imaginary world. Go Down, Moses –the production selected to kick off the XXXIV Festival de Otoño a Primavera– is a profoundly powerful piece intended to showcase a radical transfiguration of the story of Moses through visceral images and sound.

The production, which can be seen at the Teatros de Canal’s Sala Roja from 13 to 15 October, is an unexpected, esoteric and abstract piece that explores the book of Exodus in the Old Testament. Dark, deep and divisive, Go Down, Moses is a profound meditation on the human mind by the most radical theatre company in Italy, a foundation upon which all kinds of uncertainties and existential questions are raised. The audience will not see an updated version of Exodus; Castellucci chooses instead to engage with the figure and the story of Moses on an abstract level.

Castellucci uses a series of tableaux and fragments to transfigure different moments in the life of Moses, a series that reflects something inherent in the substance of our time, in contemporary concepts and premonitions. Go Down, Moses is a performance of powerful images and ferocious sounds that leave their mark. “This is, above all, a visceral experience”, says the New York Times.

Castellucci returns to Madrid this autumn after the success of Moses and Aaron, an opera that was widely acclaimed when it premiered at the Teatro Real last May. He also presented On the Concept of the Face, Regarding the Son of God to much applause and controversy at the 2011 Festival de Otoño a Primavera. Go Down, Moses first premiered at the Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne on 25 October 2014 and has since been seen at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals around the world, in cities such as Adelaide, Quebec, New Jersey, Rotterdam, Montpellier, Athens, Vienna, Strasbourg, Munich, Antwerp, Paris and Rome.
