It's not often that we get to explore and appreciate international works by writers in Spain. Director Ignacio García has bridged Braga, in northern Portugal, and the kitchen of San José convent in Ávila. This performance showcases the perspective of La lengua en pedazos, the play for which Juan Mayorga secured the National Prize for Dramatic Literature in 2023, commended for its clear and modern dramatic viewpoint of a figure such as Teresa de Jesús, who persisted with her convictions despite the constraints of her era, interwoven with the finest of Spanish literature.
Transformed into A Língua Em Pedaços, Juan Mayorga's masterpiece is presented in an immersive production by Companhia de Teatro de Braga, which boasts 42 years of experience and celebrates its 150th production with this exceptional offering.
The performance strives to submerge the viewer in the spiritual realm of the 16th century and the mystical realm of Santa Teresa through a journey of the senses. This creation's scope encompasses the kitchen with its fragrances, smoke emanating from the wood intermingling with the distant hum of the nuns’ prayers. The sombreness of the convent is brought alive by the kindling and candlelight, and the hush wherein God is summoned to mend the wounded. The performance is an experiential piece, where the audience are where the convent sisters are coveting meagre sustenance.
