A community, social and educational dance project led by Mucha Muchacha for the Festival de Otoño 2023

Decentralisation and dynamism: not everything is going to be an exhibition at the Festival de Otoño. We promote an experience that will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on Madrid’s northern region. Mucha Muchacha is a young company that was born from Spanish dancing. They feel the urge to work from a contemporary perspective, constantly in dialogue with the current framework of living arts, making them part of their perspective and their language, looking for a close relationship with the audience and pushing the borders of scenic innovation. They will present their community, social and educational dance project at the Centro Comarcal de Humanidades Sierra Norte, in the township of La Cabrera.

They will host a party-workshop. Its premise is to open up the company’s creative process to a group of 25 people from 15 years onwards from the 42 townships in the Sierra Norte region regardless of their experience within the dancing arts. The results will be energetic and celebratory, and the main theme dealt with the possibilities to translate traditional folclore to contemporary practices in the community. What is amazing about this party-workshop is its ability to take an existing folclore culture and use it to think about the future and carry it forward with us. Coinciding with the last two working days, the process will be open to the public but not to show a specific result, but as part of the process itself and as a final party.

Despite being in the prime of its youth, Mucha Muchacha is an expert performing arts company. They are working with fiction to create a future, building a desire from tradition, from cultural heritage, from evolution, that echoes and leaves its mark. The heart of the company’s creative team is made up of dancers and choreographers Ana Botía, Belén Martí Lluch, Marina de Remedios, and Marta Mármol. They collaborate with an artistic team from La Tristura Celso Giménez and Violeta Gil. Mucha Muchacha is the company’s magnum opus. It is contemporary dance project focused on the ideas of empowerment, determination, voice, participation, freedom, and cooperation. Also, in 2023 they have showcased their second work Para cuatro jinetes in collaboration with Los Voluble, an ambitious and cross-disciplinary piece where they have dived into the hidden phantasmagoria of folclore to imagine a dance of the future.

Seré folclore is an opportunity for artistic coexistence and for dialogue, reflection, and trust. It allows for the collective creation and empowerment of the Sierra Norte community through its people and its current folclore. They’re looking to invoke new forms of expression, new ways of thinking about who they are, what they do together and what that will lead to as they look to the future. Mucha Muchacha explain: “Seré folclore will be a space where we can fictionalise the world before it fictionalises us. It will also provide a space for us to meet, chat, dance, confess, shout, proclaim, jump for joy or sorrow and sing to our heart’s content.” It is also a caring space where questions can be asked: What will the group proclaim? What does the popular song of this or that township reveal to us? What have these people got to say to the world? And what have they got to say to each other? What will folclore be like for the coming generations after the group’s innovations? "It will be that folclore of the future that is the main engine that moves the heart of this project, becoming a performative weapon that allows us to return to the most beastly, raw and human side of the body.”
