“ Daimon and fucking logic is a demonic apotheosis that theatre transforms into beauty. The beauty in action that moves us. This beauty that is not of the landscape or of a magnificent sunset, but of human beauty that theatre can occasionally coax or even erupt on the stage, in an offering where the presence of each and every spectator is a part of it”.Afonso Becerra, Artezblai
With more than 30 years of avant-garde creation on the boards, Matarile has been the pioneer of an innovative theatre in Spain and an irrefutable reference of our contemporary dramatic landscape. Its theatre makes the audience feel like participants in something that is unique and unrepeatable. Matarile doesn't seek viewers, it seeks dialogue participants. As it demonstrates once again with the November staging of its new creation, DAIMON y la jodida lógica, in Madrid at the 37th Autumn Festival after its premiere on 6 September 2019 at Sala Ártika in Vigo.
DAIMON, in line with the theatre of Matarile, can acquire different meanings based on the context in which it is placed. For the creator Ana Vallés, this figure is, from her perspective:
"Destiny, the voice of conscience, intuition, angel or demon, the whisper of an interior voice that stops or pushes one forward.
Podemos darle una corporeidad, una presencia oscura o colaboradora, imaginarnos una figura que nos acompaña and que no es yo, and nuestro yo quedaría intacto, íntegro.
A hidden, unpredictable presence that determines actions and decisions that can't be rationally explained.
We can give it form, a dark presence or a collaborator, imagine a figure that accompanies us, yet is not an "I", our "I" remaining intact and whole.
But I'm more interested in the demon that is also "I", our incomprehensible "I", a part of us that is connected to the irrational, to the mysterious, the fantastic, a door into the extraordinary, to that which saves us, the sublime or the insane.
Let's say that this woman is not happy, she never was. Let's speak of what was found inside a closet, in the wardrobe. Let's talk of wigs co-existing with philosophical essays.
Let's talk of breakfasts, cigarettes, hands, shelters, perhaps a cat, of that voice, of things that matter".
DAIMON y la jodida lógica will be staged at Teatro de La Abadía with a cast of nine actors, two of them selected through public calls in the Centro de Danza of Zaragoza and the Azkuna Zentroa of Bilbao. Actors, musicians, dancers all form part of a montage that heralds Matarile's return to the big format, to original music with the on-stage presence of its creators, and to the impossibility of assigning a single label to the work of this avant-garde Galician company during its 30-year career.
"I'm interested in the DAIMON that is also "I", our incomprehensible "I", a part of us that is connected to the irrational, to the mysterious, the fantastic, a door into the extraordinary, to that which saves us, the sublime or the insane", emphasises Vallés. And states: "let's say that this woman is not happy, she never was. Let's speak of what was found inside a closet, in the wardrobe. Let's talk of wigs co-existing with philosophical essays. Let's talk of breakfasts, cigarettes, hands, shelters, perhaps a cat, of that voice, of things that matter".
