The Region of Madrid is consolidating its position as the region of Spain with the highest number of audiovisual shoots. An excellent setting for filming and a territory chosen by production companies to tell their stories.
The Region of Madrid hosted the filming of more than 950 productions in 2022, maintaining its position as an excellent filming location for yet another year and growing as a major centre for audiovisual production in Spain.
During the past year, a total of 89 feature films, 103 short films and 79 series have been shot. To this number of productions must be added more than 420 commercials, approximately 50% of audiovisual production in the region, which reflects the importance of advertising cinema in Madrid. The almost one thousand audiovisual productions in the region are completed by around 260 television projects, video clips and other audiovisual formats such as reports and promotional videos shot on location in Madrid.
Filming has spread to at least 61 municipalities in the Community of Madrid, which have registered audiovisual filming in the last year. While the capital Madrid accumulates the largest volume of audiovisual filming in the region, municipalities such as Alcalá de Henares, Alcorcón, Alcobendas, Pozuelo de Alarcón, Pinto, Villanueva de la Cañada, El Escorial, Boadilla del Monte, Navacerrada, Tres Cantos, Ciempozuelos, San Lorenzo de El Escorial or Talamanca del Jarama have been the scene of filming for different productions.
The Region of Madrid hosted more than 900 film shoots in 2021 in nearly 100 municipalities in Madrid. Madrid is the region in Spain that hosted the largest number of audiovisual productions during the year, participating in 35% of the feature films produced and 71% of the series.
A total of 88 feature films, 68 series and 119 short films were shot on location in the Madrid region. Additionally, more than 400 commercials and more than 250 television projects, video clips and other audiovisual formats such as reports and photo shoots were also located in the Madrid region.
Like all economic activities, filming in the Madrid region in 2020 was affected by the health pandemic and the restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 health and safety measures. However, shoots in the Community of Madrid were reactivated rather quickly thanks to the efficiency of the audiovisual sector in adapting their health and safety protocols, which are key factors for the recovery of the audiovisual production activity in the region.
The number of shoots located in Madrid during 2020 shows the consolidation of the Madrid region as a centre of reference in the production of fiction series. These include international series such as La Fortuna by Alejandro Amenábar for Movistar+, shot in Madrid, Leganés, Torrejón de Ardoz, Cercedilla, Mejorada, Valdemorillo and Colmenarejo; and the series Soulmates by AMC Studios with the service of Fresco Film, which, in addition to the capital, was located in a number of municipalities in Madrid, such as Getafe, Collado Villalba, Pozuelo de Alarcón, Algete, Torrelodones, El Escorial, San Martín de la Vega, Daganzo de Arriba and Los Molinos.
Different locations in the Community of Madrid were the set of recently premiered series such as Veneno, Parot, Ana Tramel, El juego and Jaguar, and the new seasons of Élite, Las Chicas del Cable, El Ministerio del Tiempo, Pequeñas Coincidencias, El Vecino and Estoy vivo.
As for new feature films, several titles were filmed in our region, such as ‘Official Competition’, starring Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, which was shot in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Las Rozas and the city of Madrid. Other titles were Fernando León de Aranoa's El buen patrón, whose main location was in Móstoles; Arantxa Echevarría's La Familia Perfecta, which was shot in Rascafría; and Santiago Segura's box-office hit Padre no hay más que uno 2.
